Mary Stevens Gibbs

Mary Stevens Gibbs, age 92, of Alto, died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the North East Georgia Medical Center. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 24th at 2:00pm at the Davisboro United Methodist Church with burial in the Davisboro Cemetery. Rev. Ron Dixon will officiate.

Mary was born in Davisboro the daughter of the late Cleveland F. Gibbs and the late Leila Bacon Gibbs Arnold. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville in 1942, a Master of Science Degree in Home Economics from the University of Georgia in 1952 and a Doctor of Education Degree from Columbia University in 1961. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Tau Sigma and Kappa Delta Phi honor societies. She taught high school home economics, served as a Cooperative Extension Agent for ten years obtaining membership in Epsilon Sigma Phi and taught Consumer and Economic Education at Indiana State University where she retired in 1988 receiving the rank of Professor Emerita of Home Economics. In retirement, Mary gave her best efforts to volunteering with The Sharing and Caring Place in Cornelia and she was a vital part of its ministry for over ten years. While Mary excelled in her education, career and volunteer work, her greatest achievement was her dedication to her family. She is predeceased by brother, Joe B. Gibbs, Sr. and his wife Marion Seigler Borders Gibbs, her nephew, Andrew Jackson Borders III and her nephew-in-law Danny Daniels.

Survivors are: her nephew, Joe B. Gibbs, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Alto, nieces, Mary Anne Daniels of Macon and Carolyn Lanier and her husband, Dale, of Lizella, her niece-in-law Donna Borders of Louisville, nine great nieces and nephews, fifteen great great nieces and nephews, her step brothers Fred Arnold and his wife, Lena, of Eastman and Carroll Arnold and his wife, Hope, of Louisville.

The family will receive friends on Sunday at the Davisboro United Methodist Church from 12:30 until the hour of service at 2:00pm.
