Mrs. Nellie Shirey Herringdine, age 89, originally of Washington County, Georgia died early Monday morning, May 30th (Memorial Day) at the Rainbow Retirement Home in Arnoldsville, Georgia near Athens after a short illness. She was the only child of the late William Benjamin Shirey and Bessie Jordan Shirey of Harrison, Georgia.
Mrs. Herringdine was a retired public school teacher with forty years of service to the children of Washington and Johnson Counties. She was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Sandersville, Georgia but in recent years had attended St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Athens with her son and his family. She attended Middle Georgia College in Cochran but received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from what is now known as Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville. However, she also loved the University of Georgia and was a planned gift donor to the University of Georgia Foundation to benefit the School of Forest Resources.
Her survivors include: her son, James William (Bill) Herringdine and his wife Connie of Bogart, Georgia; and two grandchildren, Helen Herringdine of Starkville, MS and Jay Herringdine of Lula, GA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Paul Herringdine of Sandersville, but originally of Johnson County.
A funeral service will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, 800 Timothy Rd., Athens, Georgia at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 1, 2011. The family will receive friends in the church’s parish hall immediately following the service. There will be a visitation in Sandersville that same evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the May & Smith Funeral Home, 1119 Riddleville Rd. (State Rte. 242). A graveside service and interment will be held at Beulah Baptist Church, 3015 Wrightsville-Riddleville Rd., Harrison, Georgia near Wrightsville at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 2.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Program at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, The Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc. (PO Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053), or the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
Bernstein Funeral Home of Athens and May & Smith Funeral Home of Sandersville are in charge of the arrangements.
