Norma Layton Steele, age 76, of Sandersville, passed away on July 8, 2022 at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday July 11 at May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Jackson Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Mike Jones will officiate. Pallbearers will be Dean Davis, Bill Hartley, Roan Miller, Ken Vance, Franklin Wood, Ron Wallace, Russell Sheppard and Trevor Sheppard. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service.
Norma was born in the old Rawlings Sanitarium in Sandersville and reared on the Layton family farm near Riddleville. She began school in Riddleville with her mother, Mildred, teaching her in several grades. She graduated an honor graduate in the class of 1963 from the Washington County High School. Norma attended the University of Georgia to further her education earning both a Bachelor and master’s degree as an honor graduate. Norma became an Atlanta resident and like her mother, taught school. She moved to Hayward, California and lived for several years before retiring and moving back to the family farm near Riddleville. Norma, like the rest of her family, was a member of the Jackson Baptist Church.
Norma had a sincere love for all animals and especially cats. She never turned down a stray. Norma, like her parents was talented at singing, playing the piano, painting and flower arranging.
She is predeceased by her parents, Charles Vernon Layton and Mildred Price Layton. Survivors are her brother, Benjamin Layton and his wife Patsy of Wrens; and very dear friend, Sue Anglin.
