Orran Lawson “Dick” Hudson, II, age 77, of Sandersville, died Thursday, November 9, 2017, at his residence. A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, November 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at his home on North Harris Street.
Dick was born on May 3, 1940, in Sandersville to Orran Edward Hudson and Nelle Cooley Hudson. He attended Emory at Oxford before graduating from the University of Georgia with a BFA degree in drawing and painting in 1962. He was initially employed with the family-owned Sandersville Coca-Cola Bottling Company before an interest in architecture and historic preservation led him into a lifelong career in planning and development, beginning in Macon with the Middle Georgia Area Planning and Development Commission. After receiving a Masters of Public Administration in Environment Growth Management from Florida Atlantic University in 1988, Dick was employed as a planner for several Florida communities, primarily Palm Beach County and City of Boynton Beach.
Though a resident of south Florida for much of his adult life, in retirement Dick returned to Sandersville to be near family. He was actively involved with the Washington County Historical Society and was a wealth of information and anecdotes about local history. Though perhaps known best for his sense of humor and generous spirit, Dick was a man of many talents and interests, including art, cuisine, architecture and design, gardening, genealogy, and travel, with a special fondness for Florence, Italy.
He is predeceased by his parents, his brother, John Robert Hudson, his sister, Ellamarie Hudson Garrett, and his partner, Howard Pearce.
Dick is survived by his brother, Clark Brevard “Buddy” Hudson and his wife Gerri of Sandersville; nieces, Harriett Hudson of Nashville, TN, Nelle Hudson Smith and her husband Jeff of Savannah, Helen Hudson Kelly and her husband David of Savannah, Susan Garrett Hammock her husband Danny of Sandersville, and Elizabeth Garrett Pettibone and her husband Doug of California.
