Dr. Osgood Massee Bateman Sr. DVM, age 83, of Warthen Street in Sandersville, died Saturday, March 08, 2008 at the Washington County Extended Care Facility following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 11, at 11:00 am at the Sandersville United Methodist Church with burial in the Sandersville Old City Cemetery. Rev. Michael Brown will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Neil Pittman, Tom Hutcheson, Bob Wilson, Aubrey Moore, Needham B. Bateman III, Freddie Cullens, Horace Daniel, and Leon Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Sandersville Rotary Club.
Dr. Bateman was born and raised in Deepstep the son of the late Needham Bryant Bateman and the late Maude Veal Bateman Avant. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia and the Auburn University School of Veterinary Science. Dr. Bateman was a retired doctor of veterinary medicine having owned and operated the Washington County Animal Hospital for 52 years. He was a member of the Sandersville United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class, a member of the Methodist Men’s group and served on the board of directors of the Sandersville United Methodist Church Foundation. Dr. Bateman formerly served his church in numerous leadership roles. He was former Chairman of the Washington County Commissioners, a former member and past chairman of the Washington County Board of Health in which he served for 28 years. Dr. Bateman was also a former member and past president of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce as well as a former member of the Washington County Industrial Development Authority. He was an active member of the Sandersville Rotary Club where he was a past president and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Dr. Bateman also served on the Library Board, was a long time member of the Washington County Historical Society and was an Army Veteran of WWII.
Survivors are his wife Frances Williamson Bateman of Sandersville, children, India Vesta Bateman Khalsa of Denver CO., Osgood Massee Bateman Jr. MD. (Sumana Brahman) of New Delhia India and Gregory Hilliard Bateman (Anne Bader Bateman) of Warthen, and grandchildren Valmiki Bateman, Naveen Bateman, James Osgood Bateman and Alexander Bader Bateman.
