Paul Van Loenen

Mr. Paul van Loenen, age 77 of Bartow, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Pruitt Health in Macon, following an extended illness. A memorial service will be held on June 3, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. in Augusta at the First Southern Methodist Church of Augusta. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 11:00 a.m.  to 1:00 p.m. at May and Smith Funeral Home. A graveside service, with burial in Brownwood cemetery of Sandersville will follow at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. van Loenen was born in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, to the late Johannes van Loenen and the late Irmgard Hurtmanns. A chemist by trade, Mr. van Loenen worked for several kaolin companies, including ECC and Burgess. Mr. van Loenen was also very active in the local community, serving as past treasurer for the Sandersville Lions Clubs, Salvation Army bell ringer, and a member of Georgia Farm Bureau, where he helped with the annual fair. He was also active in his church, First Southern Methodist Church of Sandersville, where he served as song leader, and Chairman of the church board. Mr. van Loenen was a member of the college board for, Southern Methodist Bible College and on the Board of Administration for the Alabama, Florida, and Georgia Conference of the Southern Methodist Church. He was a Vigil member in the Order of the Arrow for Boy Scouts of America and served as a Boy Scout leader for 30 years. For years he was a board member of the Georgia Home Education Association. He was a life member of the American Dairy Goat Association. He was a fixture at Washington County Recreation Department Soccer program, coaching and refereeing for over 25 years. In his free time Mr. Paul enjoyed being outdoors, hiking and camping, and his favorite hobby was chicken farming at his farm, Holland Hill Farm. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Katrina Annette van Loenen and sister Nell van Loenen.

Mr. van Loenen is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lorraine; sons: Hans van Loenen (Rebecca) of Thomson, Lucas van Loenen (Alicia) of Greenville, SC, and Nathan van Loenen of Conyers; daughters: Heidi van Loenen of Hepzibah, Tineke van Loenen of Fort White, FL, and Kendra van Loenen, also of Hepzibah; grandchildren, Zoe, Eleanor, Oliver, Izaak, Micah, and Samantha; his brothers: Hans W. van Loenen and Fred van Loenen; and many nieces and nephews.
