Mrs. Polly Holton Tompkins, of Lee Street in Sandersville, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday morning, January 7, 2024, at her residence. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, January 10th, at 11:00 a.m. at Sandersville United Methodist Church. Reverend Dr. Stan Littleton will officiate. Pallbeares will be Mrs. Tompkin's nephews, George Burch, Bobby Grant, Ken Grant, Billy Holton, Jr, Bob Holton, Jr, Glenn McGahee, John McGahee, and Trey Kinard will serve as honorary pallbearers. The Tompkins family will greet friends in Heritage Hall at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. Interment will be private in Brownwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Tompkins was born on August 8, 1923, the daughter of the late Mattie Usry Holton and Henry Grady Holton. She is a graduate of Sandersville High School and Perry Business School. Mrs. Tompkins retired from Burgess Pigment Company after 38 years of service and at the time of her retirement, was the Corporate Secretary and Treasurer. She was a life-long member of Sandersville United Methodist Church, where she served as a Trust Officer of the Sandersville First United Methodist Church Foundation. She also served on many church committees throughout the years including the Administrative Board and the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. Mrs. Tompkins was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Washington County where she was named “Pilot Sweetheart of the Year” four times, planned and coordinated the Pilot Club Senior Walk, and had a 21-year perfect attendance record. Mrs. Tompkins and her husband Wendell, Sr. shared a love for Sandersville and Washington County and supported all community activities and initiatives with Mrs. Tompkins serving on the Board of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. & Mrs. Tompkins were also known for their love of walking and could be seen every morning at 5:30 a.m. on the streets of Sandersville on their 3-mile walk.
She is pre-deceased by her Husband, Wendell Tompkins, Sr. and her 9 siblings: Virginia Holton Blackburn, Bernice Holton Gwinn, Cebron Holton, Vera Holton Grant, Billy Holton, Betty Holton Riggs, Bobby Holton, Missie Holton McGahee and Laverne Holton Kinard.
Survivors include her son, Wendell Tompkins, Jr. of Statesboro and numerous nieces and nephews.
