Mr. Powell West Griffith II, age 83, of Eatonton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 19, 2021, following a brief illness. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, December 22 nd , at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Eatonton with Reverend David Wofford officiating. The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of service at the church.
Mr. Griffith was born on April 25, 1938, in California, the son of the late Dr. Powell West Griffith and the late Mrs. Inez Gregory Griffith Stribling. He was reared in the Los Angeles area until the untimely death of his father. His family returned home to Eatonton where Powell graduated from Putnam County High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and returned home where he graduated from the University of Georgia. Powell married the love of his life, Marianne Ridgway and settled at home in Eatonton where they would raise a family. Mr. Griffith spent most of his working career in sales for Horton Homes Manufacturing where he would retire after 30 years of service. Much of Powell and Marianne's life centered around raising their three sons and supporting them in each of their endeavors. He was civically involved in his community, serving as a former Putnam County Tax Commissioner, a former member of the Board of Directors of Peoples Bank and an active Gatewood School supporter. Powell was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church of Eatonton where he served his church in numerous leadership roles and he was also a member of the church choir. Following the death of Marianne, Powell later married Sandra Charles. They enjoyed living on Lake Sinclair, spending time with family and friends, and traveling in their RV.
Survivors include his wife Sandra Lowe Charles Griffith; sons, Powell W. Griffith III and his wife Beth of Eatonton, Benjamin R. Griffith and his wife Kim of Athens and Gregory Griffith and his wife Allison of Birmingham, AL,; stepsons, Chris Charles and his wife Lisa of Comer, Craig Charles and his wife Debbi of Cincinnati, OH., and Les Charles and his wife Carol of Milledgeville; grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne G. Culberson and her husband Alex, Grace Griffith, Olivia Griffith, Benjamin Griffith, Bo Griffith, Caroline Griffith, John Will Griffith, Anabel Griffith, Yancey Griffith and Lillie Griffith; great grandson, A.J. Culberson; and sister, Caroline G. Lundy of Eatonton.
