Richard Dennis Veal, Jr., age 85, of Deepstep Georgia died on Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 22 at Smyrna Baptist Church in Deepstep with burial in the Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Jimmy Harris will officiate. Pallbearers will be Reed Brogan, Christopher Tkacik, Darrell Veal, Curt Patrick, Devin Lattimore, Shane Ruis, Jonathan Veal and Taylor Veal.
Mr. Veal was a native of Washington County, the son of the late Richard Dennis Veal, Sr. and the late Inez Brooks Veal. He attended Georgia Military College and Mercer University.
He was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Quartermaster Corp., with 20 years of service, and a Vietnam veteran. After returning to Washington County, he was employed by Farm Bureau Insurance Company, retiring as agency manager after eighteen years of service. He was a longtime and faithful member of Smyrna Baptist Church.
He enjoyed Georgia Bulldogs football, Atlanta Braves baseball, weekly golf games, Bible study, meeting for breakfast with his “coffee club” friends, and American history. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Richard and his wife Phyllis had recently celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary.
Survivors are his wife, Phyllis Strum Veal of Deepstep, two daughters, Cynthia V. Zaruba of Greensboro, NC, and Susan V. Hill of Alpharetta, two sons, Richard D. Veal III and his wife Beverly of Milledgeville and Randy Veal and his wife Linda of Deepstep, six grandchildren, Sarah Z. Brogan, Emily Z Tkacik, Jonathan Veal, Stephanie V. Patrick, Taylor Veal, and Kimberly Veal, three great grandchildren, Lyla Veal, Kieran Brogan and Maddox Patrick, a brother, William Edward Veal and wife Louise of Deepstep, and a special cousin, Rhonda Brooks Segars of Milledgeville.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday.
