Mr. Rufus Hodges Hartley, Sr. age 84, of 7593 Old Savannah Road in Tennille died Monday, May 23rd, in the University Hospital in Augusta following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 24th, in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church near Tennille with burial in the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Mr. Hartley was a native and life long resident of Washington County, the son of the late Arlie Linton Hartley and the late Sarah Lavenia Lindsey Hartley. He was a farmer. Mr. Hartley was a member and Deacon of the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He was a member and former president of the Tennille Farm Bureau and a former chairman of the Washington County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. Mr. Hartley was a former member of the Washington County School Board and former chairman of the Tennille School Board and a former director of the Tennille Banking Company. Mr. Hartley was a World War II Army veteran.
Survivors are his wife, Nancy Durham Hartley of Tennille, his children; Rufus Hodges Hartley, Jr. and his wife Kay of Tennille, William O’Neal (Bill) Hartley and his wife Joyce of Tennille, Sarah Ann Hartley Starr and her husband Hal of Stockbridge, Joe McHan Hartley and his wife Rachel of Harrison, Susan Marie Hartley McBroom and her husband Thomas of Newnan and Sandra Leigh Hartley of Newnan; a sister, Arlene Hartley of Tennille; a brother, Lambeth O’Neal Hartley of McDonough; ten grandchildren, Joseph Hartley, Ashley Hartley, Neal Hartley, Josh Hartley, Matt Hartley, Audra Hartley, Jeremiah Starr, Hannah Hartley, Thomas Hartley and Will McBroom; two great grandchildren, Will Hartley and Anna Kate Hartley.
The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday. The family suggests that donations be made to the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, 270 News Bridge Road , Tennille, Georgia 31089 or to the American Cancer Society , P. O. Box 632, Sandersville, Georgia 31082.
