Mrs. Sarah Wilkerson Lansdell, age 97, of Sandersville, died Tuesday, September 5, 2017. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 9 th at 2:00 p.m. at her home, Forest Grove, with burial in the family cemetery. Reverend Douglas Ivey will officiate. Pallbearers will be Bill Black, John Thomas Jones III, Jeffrey Cramer, Charles Jordan, Mel Daniel, Stacy Williford, David Dollar and Chris Hutchings. There will be a viewing in the home from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service and the family will host a gathering following the service.
Mrs. Lansdell was born on September 5, 1920 and raised on her family farm, Forest Grove, in Sandersville. She is the daughter, of the late Julian Lyle “Jack” Wilkerson and the late Imogene Swint Wilkerson. She was a member of the Sandersville High School Class of 1937 and a graduate of Armstrong Junior College. At the University of Georgia she earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. In the 1940’s she and Maurice Friedman wrote and edited the Sandersville Progress. Mrs. Lansdell attended Tulane University, where she worked on graduate studies prior to beginning work as an educator with the Pickens County Board of Education in Jasper. Her career in Journalism began as the Women’s Editor for the Macon News prior to accepting a position with the Louisville Courier Journal in Louisville, KY where she retired as the paper’s Art Critic after a 30 plus year career. Mrs. Lansdell was a longtime resident of Louisville where she raised her daughter, enjoyed acting with the Louisville Little Theatre, and was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Louisville. In retirement, Mrs. Lansdell moved back to Sandersville to her childhood home where she enjoyed breeding and showing Manchester Terriers. She was a member of First Christian Church where she formerly sang in the chancel choir.
Mrs. Lansdell is survived by her daughter, Lyle Wilkerson Lansdell of Sandersville, her grandson, Emil Amos Snizek of Brooklin, NY., and cousins.
