Mrs. Sarah Roughton Wilson, age 88, of Sandersville, died Friday, October 4, 2019 at the Heritage Inn Nursing Home following an extended illness. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 7 th at 2:00 p.m. at Sandersville United Methodist Church with burial in Brownwood Cemetery. Reverend Dr. Stan Littleton will officiate. Pallbearers will be Randy Mayberry, Grayson Upton, Roan Miller, Howard Brantley, Russell Riner, Wendell Tompkins Jr., Tracy Giddens and C.V. Brookins.
Mrs. Wilson was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the daughter of the late Ralph Emerson Roughton Sr. and the late Sarah Rogers Roughton. She was a graduate of Sandersville High School and Wesleyan College. Mrs. Wilson along with her late husband Oliver, owned and operated Wilson Furniture Company and later Wilson Frame Shop both in downtown Sandersville for many years. She was a lifelong active member of Sandersville United Methodist Church where she served in numerous roles throughout her life, including her membership in the Adult Sunday School Class, the UMW, and as a member of the Mamie Tarbutton Circle. She also formerly taught Kindergarten Sunday School as well as served as the church’s longtime co-treasurer. More importantly, she was given the title of the “Quiet Disciple” by her UMW friends and was known by her church family as a true “servant of the Lord”. Mrs. Wilson was a former member and past secretary and treasurer for the Washington County Pilot Club, and she was also a former member of the Transylvania Club. She and Oliver were both huge community supporters, especially in supporting their children and grandchildren as well as the education of all. Mrs. Wilson is predeceased by her loving husband, Oliver Clyde Wilson.
Survivors include her children, Stan Wilson and his wife Debi of Atlanta, Bob Wilson and his wife Laurice, John Wilson and his wife Suzy and Leigh Anne Pullen and her husband Mark all of Sandersville; grandchildren, Matthew Wilson and his wife Abby, Chris Wilson and his wife Merelise, Sarah Louise Wilson, Drew Wilson, Katie Wilson, Nick Pullen and Laura Pullen; great grandchildren, Oliver Wilson and Libby Wilson; and her brother, Ralph E. Roughton Jr. of Atlanta.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 6 th from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
