Mr. Stanley (Stan) Merton Verrill, age 78, of Riddleville, passed away at his residence Tuesday, July 18, 2023. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, July 21st at 2:00 p.m. at New Bethel Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery with military honors. Reverend Marty Deal will officiate. The family will greet friends from 1:00 -2:00 p.m at the church. Pallbearers will be Robbie Lane, Jairus Lane, Hugh Brown, Desmond Josey, Kenneth Josey and Shawn Verrill. Deacons of New Bethel will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Stan was born and reared in Gray Maine, the son of the late Leon Otis Verrill and the late Elsie Hodgkin Verrill. He graduated from Casco High School where he excelled in track and field. Stan served his country in the U.S. Army. His working career started in food service as the Manager of Shoney's Big Boy restaurant in Augusta. Stan moved to Sandersville to manage the newly opened McDonalds prior to assuming the Washington County bread territory for Sun Beam Bread Company, where he became known as the "Bread Man". He later transitioned to the Kaolin Industry where he worked as an equipment operator and surveyor for Imerys from which he retired. Stan was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and Sunday School director. For many years he participated in Oconee Outreach and helped raise money for the Washington County Relay for Life. Stan loved to fish with Ann and also played golf. And he always enjoyed his many trips back to Maine to visit with family and friends. He is predeceased by his brother, David Verrill; sister-in-laws and husbands, Omie and Howard Josey and Betty Jane Josey and her husband Ralph.
Survivors include, his wife of 54 years, Ann Brown Verrill of Riddleville; brother, Wayne Verrill and his wife Marietta of Virginia; sister-in-law, Kris Verrill of Maine; cousin and best friend, Archie Tripp of Maine; Goddaughter and cousin, Diane Reynolds of Maine; nephew, Shawn Verrill; brother-in-law, Mickey Brown; special niece, Janet Lane; and numerous other nieces and nephews and cousins.
