Steve Walter Shurling

Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Steve Walter Shurling, age 74, of Sandersville, died Sunday, August 17, 2008 at the Carl Vinson Medical Center in Dublin following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 20th at 2:00pm at the Piney Mount United Methodist Church with burial at the Sisters Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors. Rev. Jim Dominey will officiate. Pallbearers will be Andrew Harwood, Jordan Harwood, Jimmy Prince, Mark Prince, Jack Shurling, and Bennie Stephens.

Mr. Shurling was born in Washington County the son of the late Hudson Little Shurling and the late Annie Mary Ivey Shurling. He was retired from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Mr. Shurling also was formerly employed by WaCo Electric and the Washington County Machine Shop. He was a member of the Sisters Baptist Church.

Survivors are his wife Maggie Sue Tanner Shurling of Sandersville, daughters, Melinda T. Harwood (John) of Tyrone and Jennifer S. Brown (Russell) of Warthen, grandchildren, Kristin Corley (Shane), Andrew Harwood (Brandi), Jordan Harwood (Jenny), Kathryn Brown, Kasie Brown, Baylee Brown, and Ryder Brown, greatgrandchildren, Tanner Wheeler, MacKenzie Wheeler, Delaney Corley, Mason Harwood, and Ethan Harwood, sisters, Elizabeth Shurling Prince (Clyde) of Sandersville and Lena Shurling Vinson of Milledgeville.

The family will be at the Shurling residence 3710 Sunhill Rd. Sandersville and will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8pm at the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
