Twiggs Jackson Tanner, Sr.

Mr. Twiggs Jackson Tanner Sr., age 89, of 4314 Sunhill-Grange Road in Sandersville died Tuesday morning, February 1, 2010, in an Augusta hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 4, in the First Baptist Church of Sandersville. The Rev. Marlon Lastinger and Rev. Lee Lacey will officiate with burial in the Sisters Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Frank May, Billy Garner, Jamie Tanner, Wesley Tanner, Jon Tanner and Roan Miller.

Mr. Tanner was a native of Washington County, the son of the late Valda David Tanner, Sr. and the late Hilda Jackson Tanner. He was the husband of the late Martha Newsome Tanner. Mr. Tanner was a graduate of Sandersville High School and received his Master of Education from the University of Georgia. He was a former principal and coach in the Warren County School System and was a teacher and coach for the Washington County School System for many years. Mr. Tanner was a former employee of the Washington County Tax Assessors Office. He was an active member of the Carpenters for Christ and had been on missions to Africa, Liberia and many other mission trips. Mr. Tanner was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sandersville, the Washington County Civitan Club and the Retired Teacher Association. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. Mr. Tanner was a United States Air Force veteran of World War II.

Survivors are his children, Twiggs J. Tanner, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Milledgeville, Rosanne Tanner Gambill and her husband Mike of Oakwood, Gary J. Tanner, Sr. of Sandersville, seven grandchildren, Abby Tanner, Wesley Tanner, Jamie Tanner, Kelly Howell, Lauren Tanner Avrett, Jon Tanner and Jackson Tanner.

The family will receive friends at May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Thursday.
