Valeria Ann Barfield, 62, passed away quietly and peacefully at her home very early Tuesday morning, October 4, 2011. Valeria fought a four-year battle with cancer with determination and a positive attitude. Throughout that time Valeria never lost the warmth of her personality and the ability to smile. She has now gone on to be with the Lord.
Valeria was born in Louisville Georgia and grew up working on the family farm with her parents and her brother and sister. She was a graduate of the Louisville Academy. While in high school she operated the county bookmobile which began her lifelong love of libraries. Sometime later she worked at the University of Georgia Library as well.
She was a dedicated and involved mother who raised three children and later was a wonderful grandmother. She also worked as a substitute teacher for elementary and special education students. Upon moving to Lewisburg from Summerville, South Carolina, she became involved at the Greenbrier County Public Library where she especially enjoyed doing children’s programs.
She began work at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Library 18 years ago. Valeria liked helping students find resources and assisting faculty members in finding publications and research materials. She received the President’s Award of Excellence at the school multiple times. Valeria was a former member of the Board of Governors at WVSOM and also served as a local and statewide representative for classified staff employees. She is a former member of the Lewisburg Rotary Club and was very active in the New Friends and Old Friends ladies group.
Valeria is survived by her husband Criss Haynes; her parents, Rogers and Zulene Moats, of Louisville, Georgia; daughters Amy Barfield of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Lisa Smith and husband Billy of Hartsville, South Carolina; son Brian Barfield of Alderson, West Virginia; stepson David Haynes and wife Noriko of Tokyo, Japan; brother Lester Moats and wife Vicki of Hickory, North Carolina; sister Donna Moats of Charleston, South Carolina; grandchildren Alexis Barfield, Anna Barfield, Katherine Barfield, Trey Smith, Zane Smith, Coulter Smith, William Haynes, and Andrew Haynes as well as many nephews and nieces, other family members and many friends.
Caregivers are special people and Valeria was blessed to have the help of a skilled, compassionate, and dedicated team consisting of Bobbi Hart, Becky Cole, Brenda Boyce, Lori Beale, and Eileen Wade. These ladies made it possible for Valeria to remain comfortably at home. Thanks also for the help and support of Valeria’s home care nurse Christina Jannel.
