Virginia Smith

Virginia Smith, age 89 of Sandersville, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2021 at Washington County Extended Care Facility following an extended illness. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Kendall Heights Church of God in Sandersville, with burial in Zeta Cemetery in Tennille. Reverend Bobby Williford and Reverend Fred Garrett will officiate. Pallbearers will be Lloyd Denton, Billy Hurt, Eric Smith, Jonathan Prosser, Christian Smith, and Mack Smith, Jr.

Mrs. Smith was born November 9, 1931, the daughter of the late George Elbert Martin and the late Sally Cordry Martin. Mrs. Smith spent most of her working career as a seamstress, working until her retirement at Delta Manufacturing in Sandersville. She was a devoted Christian and was of the Pentecostal faith. Some of her greatest joys in life were fishing and listening to Gospel Music. Mrs. Smith was a huge fan of Westerns, especially those starring John Wayne and James Arnaz. She also found great pleasure in cooking for her family. Mrs. Smith was a woman who loved deeply. She was refereed to as Mama or MeMa by most who knew her. Mrs. Smith was a member of Kendall Heights Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Quincy Smith; children, William “Bill” Hurt and Brenda Fout; sisters, Susie Bell Martin, and Doris Cook; and brother, James Ervin Martin.

Survivors include her children, Lillian Bridges (Jimmy) of Sandersville, Peggy Storey (Bill) of Thomaston, Mack Smith, Sr. (Michelle) of Sandersville, Douglas Alan Smith (Ramona) of Tennille, and Donna Lynn Smith (Ronnie Bridges) of Sandersville; sister, Ella Mae Sweat of Tennille; 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and many other nieces, nephews, family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 6, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at May and Smith Funeral Home.
