W. Bruce Salter

March 25, 1926 — March 17, 2015

Mr. W. Bruce Salter, age 88, of Bartow, died Tuesday, March 17, 2015. A graveside memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21st, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bartow City Cemetery. The Reverend S.W. Middleton will officiate.

Mr. Salter was born in Bartow the son of the late Emory Carson Salter and the late Annelle Livingston Salter. He graduated high school from the Georgia Military Academy in Milledgeville prior to attending Columbia University in New York. Mr. Salter's collegiate career was then halted due to his commission into the U.S. Navy to serve his country in WWII. After his military service, he resumed his education at Duke University where he became a Tau Beta Pi honor graduate with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mr. Salter returned to his home of Bartow where he began a 30 year career as a civil engineer with the Georgia Department of Transportation. He was a registered land surveyor and a licensed professional engineer. Mr. Salter was a lover of the outdoors, growing trees, gardening with his wife Gwen and taking up the game of golf in retirement. He was an avid traveler, having the privilege of visiting every continent. Mr. Salter was a member of the Bartow Baptist Church. He is predeceased by his sister, Olive S. Gabbert

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Gwendolyn Thompson Salter of Bartow; sons, Wallace Bruce Salter, Jr. and his wife Rose of Bishop, Emory Bennett Salter and his wife Faye of Sandersville, William Alfred Salter and his wife Jone of Atlanta, Timothy Leon Salter and his wife Lynn of Statesboro and John Mark Salter and his wife Cheryl of Evans; eight grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the Salter residence on Hwy. 242 in Bartow and they will receive friends Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the May and Smith Funeral Home in Sandersville.
