Mr. Wendell Walter Tompkins Sr., age 91, of Sandersville, died Tuesday, December 03, 2019 at his residence following an extended illness. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Thursday, December 5 th at 12 noon at Sandersville United Methodist Church. Reverend Dr. Stan Littleton will officiate. Pallbearers will be Sandy Mercer, Cliff Sheppard, Sonny Barksdale, John Wilson, Grayson Upton, John Dean McCaskill and Carey McCaskill. The family will receive friends in Heritage Hall at Sandersville United Methodist Church on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
Mr. Tompkins was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County, the son of the late James Wright Tompkins and the late Maxie Vanlandingham Tompkins. He graduated from Sandersville High School and Southern College of Pharmacy. Mr. Tompkins served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He was the former owner of Tompkins Pharmacy. Mr. Tompkins was a lifelong and active member of Sandersville United Methodist Church where he served his church in numerous roles though out his life. He was a member of the Sandersville Lions Club, the Georgia Pharmaceutical Association, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce and the Washington County Historical Association.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Holton Tompkins; son, Wendell W. Tompkins Jr. of Statesboro; and many cherished friends and extended family members.
The family will be at the Tompkins residence on Lee Street in Sandersville.
