Sandersville

Mr. William Watson “Bill” Rigby, age 82 of Betty Street in Sandersville passed away at his residence on Friday, May 22, 2026. A private service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.

Mr. Rigby was born in Washington DC, the son of the late Edward L Rigby and the late Ruby Lee (Vess) Rigby of Alexandria, VA. As a child, his family relocated to Columbus, GA where he remained until he graduated high school. Shortly after graduating, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his country honorably. Following his service, he settled in Smyrna, GA where he had a career in data management and computer networking and was employed by The Glidden Co. where he eventually retired. Never having married nor having children of his own, he was welcomed into the family of his best friend, Bill Mitchell. He was loved and accepted as one of the family and became an honorary “Uncle” to Bill’s boys, Mitch and Charlie.

Mr. Rigby enjoyed hunting, reloading and shooting and was a fixture at “The Gun Room” in Smyrna where he made many cherished friends. He was a history buff as well as an amateur photographer and loved combining the two, documenting the disappearing history around Atlanta and North Georgia.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his friend, William “Bill” Mitchell Jr and nephew William “Mitch” Mitchell III. Mr. Rigby is survived by his chosen family – nephew Charlie Mitchell, niece Elaine Mitchell, Grandnephew Chris Mitchell, friend and confidant Jamie Garrett as well as life-long friends Barry Zuckerman, Steve McKee and Pat Evans.
